This election is a very controversial one, and one that many fear.

But we as Christians should not worry as to what will happen, and who will be our next president. God is in control.

No matter what the outcome, He is in control. We should never fear because he is our strength.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.

In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He will make your paths straight.”   – Proverbs 3:5-6

“Do not be afraid of sudden fear
Nor of the onslaught of the wicked when it comes;

For the Lord will be your confidence
And will keep your foot from being caught.”   – Proverbs 3:25-26

Life is an important issue. To me, more important than all the others. God created us humans in His own image for His glory. Yet there are those who seek to destroy human life, to destroy the very thing that God designed in His own image.

Children are a reward from the Lord (Psalm 127:3). At the moment of conception, a baby is a person, a defenseless little human being. There are those who would like to take the life of that precious little person by killing it before it ever even has a chance to breathe.

Please pray that this country would repent of it’s sins and turn back to God! I ask that you would vote Pro-Life and not Pro-Death. This country and little defenseless children are depending upon you.

Tomorrow I will be volunteering at the polls. So farewell for now!

We’ve received homemade gifts, and we have given homemade gifts – and this year is going to be especially homemade!

What is a Homemade Christmas?

A Homemade Christmas is where you give gifts that have been made with your own hands. It is sweet to receive a gift that you know the giver spent time making, so why not pass that sweetness around?

There are all sorts of things you can make for others! Aprons, scrapbooks, paintings, quilts, bags, wall decorations, foods, etc. The list could go on and on.

Not all the gifts you give away need to be homemade (there are some things you just can’t make!) to have a homemade Christmas. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or made from expensive supplies. One of the nice things of making something yourself, is that it will save you money.

I encourage you to make something (or a bunch of different somethings!) to give away this Christmas.

So . . .

. . . are you going to have a homemade Christmas?

This is a great place to share your ideas! I’d love to see what you’re creating this year!

A Homemade Christmas begins this Thursday. Each Thursday until January 1st, I will post about a homemade Christmas gift. There will be a Mister Linky there for you to sign, linking to your post. Not only can you post about the present gifts you are making, but also the past ones and ideas for future ones! Or even homemade gifts that you’ve received! Make sure you don’t post them all at once – there will be 10 opportunities all together!

If you want an icon to put in your post or on your sidebar, just click here (there are a couple to choose from).

You are welcome to spread the word about this, and I hope you participate!

BTW, There will be a couple giveaways coming up soon!

Lord willing, this will be an annual event. Next year’s will begin near
the beginning of October and last until the end of December!
I’d love to have you come back!

The time has arrived. I have moved my blog to www.simplyvintagegirl.com/blog/ from its previous location at www.homeschooolblogger.com/yesteryear. My blog will still be able to be accessed from there, but its main location will be here.

Here at my new site are:

Home (main page, linking to my other pages)
Blog (where you are right now)
Photography (where I’ll post the larger amount of photos)

Enjoy looking around!

It has taken quite a bit of my time to get this all set up. I enjoyed it, but it is nice to have it finished. Editing this site was the reason why I haven’t been posting lately at my HSB blog.

I would really appreciate it if you’d update your links and buttons to my blog. I have made a couple of new icons for this site which you can link to me with, they are located here.

Now that this is set up, I’ll be posting more regularly. Thank you to all of my readers for your patience! Thank you to Jason, Jocelyn, and Eric – without your help, this wouldn’t have been possible!

God Bless!

Bently. . . our new little dog.

How we obtained him:
We were at a UC&F conference, and before we left I asked one of our dear friends to keep her eyes open for a mutt puppy. She said she would, and three days later her mother called my momma. There was a three year old Miniature Rat Terrier that needed a home, because his owners were moving to Texas and the place where he was going to live was not working out.

No, he wasn’t a mutt (nor a puppy), but he sure was cute! We talked it over and prayed about it. The next day we went and got him, and brought him home. The rest is history.

A bit more about Bently:
He was quite a change after having a large dog (our sweet 165 lb Charlie who passed away in June), but we have gotten used to him. It was great to get a dog that was already house trained and knew several tricks. He can sit, lay down, roll over, speak, shake, army crawl (swim on carpet), and hug. His hugs are very sweet. When you hold him and he is kind of sitting up, you can ask for a hug and he will lay his head up against you.

This little guy has a lot of personality, which sometimes gets him into trouble.

He is allowed to watch us eat at the dinner table – but at a distance – sitting on a blanket covered (for extra comfort) computer chair.

He is a sweetheart, and cute to watch. He also has separation anxieties – does not like to be alone. If there is a door shut and one of us is on the other side he will cry at the door asking for the door to be opened.

Pickles (our bird) and Bently don’t get along as well as Charlie and Pickles did, but hopefully they’ll grow to appreciate each other.

Bently Sleeping

He sleeps in the sun, on the couch, in the chair, on our laps, and even sleeps well at night. With him being a little dog, we thought he would have a lot more energy, but he is actually quite calm. Of course there are those times in the evening and just before bedtime that he is extremely active and needs to play.

Bently and I

Mr. Cheese:
Sometimes when we’re laying down, he will come and stand on us. Each time he does this we begin singing the last verse of the Farmer and the Dell:

The Cheese stands alone
The Cheese stands alone
Hi-ho the derry-o
The Cheese stands alone

When Daddy comes home he gets extra excited and Daddy will play on the ground with him. Once he asked Bently, “Hey cheese, ya want to stand alone?” I was quite humored by this. His nickname is now Cheese.

-

We are very thankful to God for putting this wonderful little guy in our lives. Bently has brought some of the daily joys back into our lives that we had lost after loosing Charlie.

I love how God has showed us just a small portion of His providential ways in this situation. It is so amazing when He shows us His handiwork, and even more amazing that there is so much more that He has not revealed to us at this time!

One year ago I set up this blog at HomeschoolBlogger.com. It seems long ago, yet not really.

My first blogging experience was with Blogger.com, also know as Blogspot. Breezy and I shared a joint blog, which we kept up pretty regularly. That blog was started on January 11, 2007. After several months, we moved to HomeschoolBlogger, with our own blogs.

I orignally was planning on getting the username EmilyRose, but finding that was taken, I played around with different words. Being inspired by Narniagirl, I came up with vintagegirl, after my particular interest and enjoyment of antiques and vintage items.

My blog’s title the time that has elapsed, was thrown together after several failed attempts to come up with a satisfactory blog title. I still have my doubts about it, but it suits me just fine for the time being.

The first post that I wrote for this blog was entitled “Hello My Darling Readers”. Probably the most enjoyable post to write was just a couple posts later called “Octopus in a Bucket” where I wrote about one of the stories Daddy told me of when he was a little boy.

This blog has been a wonderful blessing to me in the fact that I have been able to share my writings and photos, while meeting new friends all the while. I have had the privilege to meet several bloggers in real life, and I hope to meet more.

Thank you, my darling readers, for spending time reading my work, and writing lovely comments which are always welcome! I hope that you are encouraged and blessed when you visit.

Praise the Lord!
Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good;
For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

- Psalm 106:1

23 June 2008

The past couple weeks have been quite busy with 4-H. We have completed several projects that have been entered into the county fair. Breezy’s 4-H projects include a basket, painted illustration, a Christmas card, scrapbook, and two photography entries. My projects include a basket, pickles, cookies, a yoyo wall hanging, perpetual calendar, and two photography entries. It’s been quite fun, but getting them all finished was a bit stressful at times.

During the week of the fair, my favorite part is the swine show. When the hogs are let loose, sometimes they run, or hop, around, with their owner following close behind. It’s quite a humorous sight. We also like watching the beef show. Now and then a steer will go out of control, but usually it’s pretty calm.

I look forward to next year’s fair.

Wow! I am extremely shocked . . . I don’t know how to start this post. I’ll just plunge in.

We now own a Nikon D60!

Momma went to Best Buy on Saturday and purchased one. The really cute part, is that it was Daddy’s idea. They’ve been talking about it for a while – secretly. I’ve been saving up for a Nikon – and I had a long ways to go before I could afford one.

Saturday morning, they were looking around online at what kind of camera’s a few bloggers have, and then went to the Best Buy website and saw that the Nikon D60 was on sale! God is so good!

That afternoon I took family portraits for some friends of ours. I was so happy with the way they turned out with the Nikon.

Since then, I’ve been taking photos left and right. They turn out clear and extremely sharp.

Here are a few that I’ve taken with the new Nikon. Which is your favorite?

Blessings,

Several years ago, my parents had been thinking about getting Bre and I a hopechest each, but they weren’t sure how it would all turn out. About four years ago, we went down to visit our grandparents and to pick up a dining room furniture set. While we were there, Grandpa Phil took Bre into one of the rooms, with the rest of us following behind. He showed her a hopechest, and said, “For your fourteenth birthday, this is going to be yours.” She was overjoyed.

I have to admit that I felt left out, but the next day, Grandpa Phil took me into another room and showed me a smaller, yet more dainty hopechest and said that it would be mine for my fourteenth birthday. I was shocked. Here I’d been feeling sorry for myself, when I was going to receive one too!

About a couple years later, on one of their trips up here, they brought Breezy’s hopechest with them. She had turned fourteen just a few months before, so it was right on time. Her hopechest was Phil’s Cousin’s hopechest and was about fifty years old. It is a very nice size, with lots of room inside. When he presented it to her, he also gave her a photo of his cousin, along with the history of the chest.

Just a few days ago, my long awaited gift (quite a ways after my fourteenth birthday) arrived. It is absolutely lovely! On April 22, 2008 I received my hopechest – wrapped in pink plastic. Breezy’s was also wrapped this way. It looks quite comical like this, but what really matters is underneath.

Below is a photo of the hopechest with the lid open. The hopechest was originally bought in 1926 for Phil’s mother – it was purchased and given to her by his father, three years before they were married.

When I first opened it, a strong scent of cedar filled the air around me. Before it came up here it held Grandpa Phil’s baby shoes, as well as an Indian headdress. He has a picture of himself as a little boy wearing the headdress.

We got it upstairs into my room, right before he left, and set it up. It looks wonderful. I have it sitting at the foot of my bed.

Inside this precious chest, I will keep items for my future. It will contain blankets for wee ones, kitchen tools for cooking, and little things that make the home a happy place to be. I had kept all of the items that will go into my hope chest in a square sewing box.

In a few days I’ll post more pictures of the inside and it’s contents, as well as a list of what I have collected so far, and what I hope to collect in the future.

Over the years, I will continue to add things to it, and one day, I will be able to use them in my own home with my family.

Blessings,
