There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven–

A time to give birth and a time to die;
A time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.

A time to kill and a time to heal;
A time to tear down and a time to build up.

A time to weep and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn and a time to dance.

A time to throw stones and a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace and a time to shun embracing.

A time to search and a time to give up as lost;
A time to keep and a time to throw away.

A time to tear apart and a time to sew together;
A time to be silent and a time to speak.

A time to love and a time to hate;
A time for war and a time for peace.
” – Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

As you may know, I will be having my wisdom teeth removed this morning and will be “out of the groove” for a few days. So, while I’m on the mend, I decided that I wanted you all to have fun while I’m away.

For the next 5 days I will be posting lovely vintage
images FREE for your enjoyment and usage!

All of the images are scans from an old book called, Young People’s Scrap-Book. This book is full of narratives, natural history, scenes, and personal sketches, containing “over three hundred elegant wood-cuts”. It is a beautiful book, and extra special because it is over 75 years old (not sure of the original publishing date).

Starting tomorrow, these delightful images will be up for your happiness! (There is a great variety: birds, buildings, children, beautiful landscapes, and more!)

Bently eating snacks in the somewhat weedy garden.

Our dear little dog, Bently Scribbles, is doing quite well! He has settled down a bit and is even behaving out of doors without a lead!

In the past whenever he escaped outside with no lead, he would run straight for the road and stand on it for a few seconds. After his few seconds of touching the pavement, he would run back into the house without a single glance to the right or to the left. He knew he had done something bad, but I suppose he wanted to enjoy every moment of his mischievousness without any distractions!

Bently taking a rest on the brick.

Now when we let him out without his lead he does splendidly! He usually walks around with us, eats a few weeds, and occasionally goes for a run (but not to the road). And, of course, once he’s back inside he gets a treat for being such a good little boy!

I’m not sure what made him change, but I’m sure glad that he did!

P.S. In case you are wondering where I’ve been: I was working on 4-H and then I caught a cold. I’m trying my best, with the Lord’s help, to get over the cold. If I am well soon, I will be having my wisdom teeth removed on Friday. Prayers would be greatly appreciated! Blessings to you all!

20 June 2009

Over the past couple weeks, we have had several animal visitors spend a bit of time in our yard. It is amazing to see the detail that God gave them.

As Buddy Davis says,

It’s designed to do what it does do. What it does do it does do well.”

A golden-eyed toad that ribbit-ed when I picked him up. He enjoyed hunkering in the grass.

A young robin who graced us with it’s presence on a few occasions (surprisingly he did not seem to mind our somewhat up-close company).

A pleasant turtle (about the size of a dinner plate) enjoyed tramping across our yard (Daddy had saved him while he was crossing the road in town and we later dropped him of at Granny’s pond).

We also had deer, but I did not get very good pictures of them as they were quicker on foot than I was at changing the camera lens.

Have you had any animal guests lately?

*Recipe added after a day of sharing these mouth-watering pictures without it!*

Strawberry Shortcake is a delightful summer dessert that looks, tastes, and smells delicious! It’s not too sweet, and adds a lovely light touch to any meal (or even tea time)!

Strawberry Shortcake

Strawberries:

6 cups strawberries, sliced
¼ cup sugar

Mix sliced strawberries and sugar in bowl, set aside.

Shortcake:

¼ cup sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
½ cup butter
1 egg, beaten
2/3 cup milk

Stir together sugar, flour, and baking powder. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Combine egg and milk; add all at once to dry ingredients. Stir until just moist.

Spread into a greased pan 8×1½-inch round baking pan, building up the edge slightly (we cut out wax paper and place it in the bottom of the pan for easy removal). Lightly sprinkle sugar on top of the cake.

Bake at 450°F for 15 to 18 minutes or until toothpick inserted near center comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove from pan and slice the cake into two layers (serrated bread knives work great).

Whipped Cream:

1 cup whipping cream
2 TB sugar
½ tsp. vanilla

In a chilled bowl combine whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla. Beat with chilled beaters of an electric mixer on medium speed until soft peaks form.

Finishing Touches:

Place bottom layer of shortcake on a cake platter. Spoon on cake half of the sweetened strawberries and half of the whipped cream. Carefully place the top layer of the shortcake on top and add a second later of strawberries and whipped cream. For extra beauty, add 1-3 whole strawberries on top. Enjoy!
